The NFL's International Expansion šš
The NFL is always thinking ahead, planning games in new markets around the world. This fall, games will be played in Brazil, and next year, in Spain. In 2025, the NFL could play eight games outside of the U.S., (expanding from the five games played internationally last season and this upcoming one).
Looking Down Under
Australia is likely to host a regular-season game soon. Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's executive vice president, mentioned that Australia is among the markets being considered. Teams like the Eagles and Rams have rights in Australia, so they could potentially play there in 2026. Cities like Sydney and Melbourne are 14 hours ahead of the East Coast, so finding a suitable game time for both local fans and those back in the U.S. could be tricky. The NFL may need to schedule a midday game on a weekday in Australia to accommodate viewers in the U.S.
Exploring New Markets
In addition to Australia, the NFL is looking at other potential markets for games. France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and even the Middle East, specifically Abu Dhabi, are under consideration. The league is doing research to see where the fan base is strong and where games could be successful. The NBA has played preseason games in Abu Dhabi, but the NFL has yet to hold a regular-season game in the Middle East. O'Reilly also mentioned the Asia Pacific region as a potential area for future games, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in that part of the world.
