Chiefs GM Brett Veach indicated that it might be "challenging" to bring WR Sammy Watkins back for the 2021 season.
Analysis: The full quote was "I love Sammy and love what he does for our offense. It will be a lot more challenging to retain him and bring him back this year
just because of where we are. We were able to make things work last year, but this year will probably be even more difficult just because we'll have some work to get under the cap, and once we do, we have to see where the markets go."
Sounds like there is little chance Watkins returns to the team unless he's willing to take a cheap and short-term deal. And still the Chiefs could choose to draft or sign a replacement.
Watkins has struggled to stay healthy only played in 10-16 games producing 37/421/2 in 2020. The former first round pick is still only 27 and dynamic when healthy, but has not shown the ability to be durable, only producing one 16-game season, in 2014 rookie year. Watkins will likely sign a short term prove-it deal, in a new city, or he may consider retirement.
