Carson Wentz and how Nick Foles influenced his decision to join the Chiefs

By: Sean Davis - 4/4/24

KANSAS CITY, MO - Carson Wentz is the new backup QB for the Kansas City Chiefs intrigued by the idea of working with Andy Reid and Matt Nagy. Wentz was inspired by the positive words of his former teammate Nick Foles, who played under Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City.

As Wentz signed his one-year contract with the Chiefs to be Patrick Mahomes' backup, he reflected on Foles' words. "He absolutely loved it. He loved working with those guys, and those things he said to me back then definitely still rang true in my head as I was making this decision," Wentz shared. The organization, the coaches, everything Foles had praised about the Chiefs played a significant role in Wentz's decision-making process. It provided him with peace of mind and comfort, knowing what he was getting into.

At 31 years old, Wentz finds himself on his fifth team in five seasons. It hasn't been an easy journey for Wentz from being a starter with the Eagles in 2020 to transitioning into a backup role. Sitting on the sidelines, waiting for a call every week, isn't the most enjoyable experience. However, he has come to accept his current role as a backup and is grateful for every opportunity that comes his way, even if it means wearing a hat on the sideline.

The reason Wentz chose to join the Chiefs is simple: the winning culture. He has seen the team's success over the past few years. Being a part of a winning team, surrounded by a good culture, a supportive community, and passionate fans, felt like the perfect fit for him.

In the end, Wentz's decision to join the Chiefs was influenced by the positive experiences shared by Foles and his own desire to be a part of a winning team. He is excited to contribute to the Chiefs' success, whether it's on the field or from the sidelines.
