The Kansas City Chiefs are set to officially sign Louis Rees-Zammit, a former Wales rugby star, on Friday. Rees-Zammit had interest from multiple NFL teams and visited the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos before deciding on the Chiefs.
Rees-Zammit, 23, made the decision to leave rugby and pursue a career in the NFL through the international player pathway. His transition from rugby to professional football came as a surprise to many, given his success in his former sport.
In a statement back in January, Rees-Zammit expressed his gratitude for his time playing rugby for Wales but stated that he felt it was the right moment to pursue a new challenge in American football. He emphasized that opportunities like this don't come around often.
Having earned 31 Test caps for Wales and showcasing his skills as a winger and fullback, Rees-Zammit also mentioned on Instagram that he wasn't closing the door on rugby entirely but wanted to explore new possibilities to enhance his abilities.
During his pro day, Rees-Zammit impressed with a 4.43 40-yard dash time, a 9'7" broad jump, and a 29-inch vertical jump. While adjusting to the NFL may take time, the league's addition of a 17th spot on the practice squad for international players this year provides more opportunities for players like Rees-Zammit to make an impact.
The NFL's international player pathway has seen success stories like Jordan Mailata of the Philadelphia Eagles, a former Australian rugby player. Rees-Zammit will be aiming to follow in Mailata's footsteps and contribute to the Chiefs' quest for another championship.
