PHILADELPHIA, PA - When questioned about the addition of Barkley, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie drew comparisons to former Eagles legends LeSean McCoy and Brian Westbrook, highlighting the value they brought to the passing game. Lurie emphasized the importance of a running back being versatile and contributing to the passing attack, not just excelling in running plays. He expressed confidence in Barkley's exceptional skill set, believing that it can be fully utilized with a stronger supporting cast of skill positions, quarterback, and offensive line. This strategic move to acquire Barkley led to a significant increase in spending on running backs, with his contract averaging $12.583 million. However, Lurie dismissed the notion that the Eagles went from being frugal to overspending, stating that the team has always been willing to invest in the right players. He acknowledged the rarity of finding exceptionally talented players and posed the question of whether it's more beneficial to allocate that kind of money to Barkley or to a player in a different position receiving the same amount. Ultimately, Lurie trusted General Manager Howie Roseman's decision to invest in Barkley. Now, it's up to Coach Sirianni and his staff to ensure that the money spent on Barkley proves to be worthwhile.
