Eagles WR DeVonta Smith is not worried about other receivers getting paid

By: Sean Davis June 5, 2024

PHILADELPHIA, PA - DeVonta Smith signed a new contract extension with the Eagles before the wide receiver market exploded in the offseason. Since then, several other top receivers like Amon-Ra St. Brown, A.J. Brown, Jaylen Waddle, and Justin Jefferson have signed deals that pay them more annually than Smith's contract.

Smith was asked if he was concerned about other receivers surpassing the value of his deal, and he responded: "No, man. No. You can't be counting the pockets of others. I'm where I want to be. This is where I wanted to be, and at the end of the day, it was still life-changing for me."

While Smith could have potentially earned over $25 million per year if he waited, he doesn't seem bothered, saying "Those guys who have got their deals, they deserve it — great players and great people."

The Eagles were smart to lock up Smith and other core players before the market exploded. As Smith noted, his deal still provides great financial security through the rolling guarantee structure. Though some criticized Smith for leaving money on the table, he seemed content with his "life-changing" payday and focused on his situation rather than comparing it to others.
