NEW YORK, NY - The New York Giants have been given permission by team ownership to select a quarterback as early as the first round in the upcoming draft. The Giants currently hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. John Mara, Giants owner expressed his support for the idea, stating that if GM Joe Schoen and HC Brian Daboll find a quarterback they truly believe in, he would back their decision to select them with the sixth pick or even consider moving up in the draft.
The Giants extended QB Daniel Jones for $160 million just last year, but his injury-riddled 2023 season has altered the situation in New York. Currently rehabbing a torn ACL, Jones is expected to be cleared for action later this offseason. He also missed three games last season due to a neck injury.
Joe Schoen (Giants GM) has been spotted at various quarterback pro days, including that of potential No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams from USC. The Giants have also hosted multiple quarterbacks for visits and interviewed several more at the NFL Scouting Combine.
In addition, the Giants signed free-agent QB Drew Lock to a one-year, $5 million deal this offseason as a backup plan.
Seahawks GM John Schneider seemed to imply that Lock chose New York because he would have a shot at competing for the starting job, although Lock later refuted Schneider's statement. Giants head coach Brian Daboll assured that Jones will be the starter once he's medically cleared.
