NEW YORK, NY - The New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh just five games into the 2024 season. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the year.
Saleh's tenure ends with a 20-36 record over three-plus seasons, failing to lead the Jets to a playoff appearance. Despite having Aaron Rodgers under center, the Jets have struggled to a 2-3 start this year. Enter Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets' defensive coordinator since 2021.
Here's what you need to know about the new interim head coach:
Ulbrich is a former NFL linebacker, playing 9 seasons with the 49ers from 2000 to 2009.
He's got coaching experience at both college and pro levels, including stints with the Seahawks, UCLA, and Falcons.
Ulbrich led the National Team to a 16-7 victory as head coach in this year's Senior Bowl.
Under Ulbrich's guidance, the Jets' defense has shown improvement, ranking 7th in points allowed this season. In their recent game against the Patriots, they blitzed on 40% of dropbacks - their highest rate under Saleh.
Aaron Rodgers, who's thrown for 7 TDs and 4 INTs so far this season, will now work under a new head coach as the Jets try to turn their season around. With this major shakeup, all eyes will be on the Jets as they face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 6. Can Ulbrich spark a turnaround?
